Tips on Downloading

Download this page in Adobe Format

Mac/Apple downloading Instructions, Our Windows PC Downloading Tips, Opening Downloaded Files, File Types, Getting Files out of E-Mail Attachments Unpacking/ Unzipping Files Downloading and Using Adobe Acrobat Reader .

Downloading is less scary than you think it is. There is a wealth of material, files that save time and help you, out there on the Internet. The main worries are if a site does not check its files for viruses. If downloading large files (like our training manuals or free software) we recommend you get a Downloading Programme. These are free and they speed up downloads and enable you to resume a connection if the phone line suddenly goes on you. We recommend NetAnts or Download Accelerator. Download Accelerator.

Our Windows PC & Mac Downloading Tips

To download this and any other file without such software:
Here are two ways to download (see also downloading programs above)

Method 1

You can click on a link and it will open the file inside the program inside your browser.. always be prepared to wait (only if it is an adobe, .rtf or similar file). Once it is opened you can save it etc.

Method 2

You can download and save the file and then open it manually (more control). This is illustrated below.

Quick Downloading & Saving for Internet Explorer

  1. To download a file (resources, pictures) find the correct link that allows you to download. Usually it will be text or a button that says, "download"
  2. Right+Click (click the right button on mouse, or Ctrl+click on Mac) on the link to the file and...
  3. Choose from the menu that pops up, "Save Target as" or "download link to disc" on Mac

Saving for a NETWORK USER

Teachers: If downloading Resources that will benefit all put them in our shared teachers common folder. Try to save them with good filename and level indication and in a folder that is suitable.
Pupils: No downloading without teacher permission. If downloading check to see if it goes in your class folder or pupil shared/common folder

Saving Private or Home User

Then a window that looks like this pops up... choose your place to save

Once you have downloaded you can go to the folder to open the file. If it has been zipped you may need to unpack it first. If it is a program you will need to install it (No installing allowed on school computers - see teacher in charge of ICT). If it is an Adobe Acrobat file this has been installed on school computers, so just click on it. For any other files you must have the software to read it… i.e. Word (reads .doc, .rtf etc)

Opening Files you have Downloaded

If you just downloaded and saved a file onto your drive and it looks like this,  it is a zipped file and you have zip software already installed on your computer. If the file is white and does not open then you need to either install a Zip program or find out what program is needed to view the file (see filetype below).

Go to www.winzip.com to download an evaluation version for unzipping (windows)

Go to www.stuffit.com for a Mac archiver

Go to www.adobe.com to get the free Acrobat reader (choose free Acrobat Reader)

For any other white coloured files check out what program is needed and install it.

Installing a Downloaded Program

Some prgrams may be zipped (i.e. require Winzip unpack them) If so you will also need to download this first and unzip before proceeding to the next step.

To install, open the zipped archive and double-click on the file usually called setup and follow instructions

To install other files you will probably just need to double-click on them to start the installation.
Some programs may require that you restart your computer afterwards.

Unpacking a Zipped File

i.e. Using our Pic n Mix Kit

You require Zip software (i.e. winzip click here if you require it). And Adobe Reader for the Readme file (www.adobe.com)…WinZip must be installed first

Getting Files out of E-Mail Attachments

  • If a file has been e-mailed to you you will see that it has near the title/header a paper clip
  • Click on the paper clip in your email with the file attached.
  • It will ask about saving or opening the file.. choose “open” but only if you are confident it is from a reliable source

Unzipping

  • WinZip/Stuffit starts…say OK etc until the Zipped file opens.
  • If it is a number of single files you can just click on any one to open it. It will open up and then you can save it elsewhere.
  • If it is a number of files that you want to unzip all at once or a files in a folder structure (i.e. a web site) then use the "extract" method.

Extract Method (i.e.for Pic 'n' Mix)

Click on the button labelled “Extract”.. this will ask you where you want to put the extracted folder… make sure that “all files” is selected (see pic.). Extract the entire folder as one, into a place that suits you.  You should end up with a folder where you saved it, “i.e. PicMix1”. If you have a central server or Intranet then this would be a good place to locate the files for anyone to use. Follow the same procedure as above but put it into a folder on the server.

Specific to Pic 'n' Mix file from in2edu: Starting the web… now go to the folder. Click on the index file to get started… there is also a “How to use this kit” within the Pic ‘n’ Mix kit. Check out the Readme file also.

Downloading and Using Adobe Acrobat Reader

Adobe Acrobat Reader is required for viewing &printing PDF files. These are electronic documents that are created and saved in this very common format so they can be made available to Internet users.
